US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that ending the war between Russia and Ukraine is possible only if both sides are willing to make compromises.

Details: Rubio emphasised that achieving peace is a priority for President Donald Trump’s administration, but the process will be challenging and require significant concessions from both sides.
Quote: “We want the war to end. That’s pretty clear. You saw the President talked about, he wants to be a president that promotes peace and ends conflicts, and it’ll be complicated as well. Those are complicated things. I couldn’t put a time frame on it, other than to say that anytime you bring an end to a conflict between two sides, neither of whom can achieve their maximum goals, each side is going to have to give up something.”
Details: Meanwhile, Rubio refrained from specifying what exactly Ukraine might need to concede. He stressed that the key to success lies in diplomacy.
Quote: “We’re not going to get ahead of ourselves talking about negotiations, and what these negotiations at this level, with these sorts of stakes, are best conducted through diplomacy, and, you know, not in public forums. And obviously the countries involved, both the Russians and the Ukrainians, will have to make ultimate decisions about what they agreed to.”
Details: When asked about the timeline for a ceasefire, Rubio responded, “It’ll be a top priority for the president, so it’ll be almost immediately. In fact, some of that’s already begun. You would hope that some of the groundwork has already been laid but it’ll be complex”.
Rubio emphasised that Russia is the aggressor in this war and insisted on the necessity of ending it.
“Russia is the aggressor in this conflict, but this war needs to end. And ultimately, that’s the complexity of foreign policy,” he said.
Background:
- American podcaster Lex Fridman, who recently interviewed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, believes the Ukrainian leader showed no desire for peace talks with Russia.
- French President Emmanuel Macron warned that Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine would not end “tomorrow or the day after”, despite promises by US President Donald Trump to bring it to a quick conclusion.
- Recently, Trump’s team acknowledged that this task is much more difficult and could take months to complete.
- During his election campaign, Trump often boasted that he could negotiate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours. However, he now admitted that it is more challenging than he had initially claimed.
