Transnistria considers coal supplies from Ukraine in exchange for energy “speculative”
Pravda Ukraine
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s proposal to start supplying Ukrainian coal for electricity generation to Transnistria is “speculative”.
Source: Vadim Krasnoselsky, leader of Transnistria, a separatist region of Moldova, NewsMaker reports
Details: He said that the coal offered by Ukraine is not suitable for the Moldovan thermal power plant, as it runs on anthracite.
Quote: “These are speculative suggestions that they will provide coal and so on. I’ll emphasise once again that our plant is technologically fuelled by anthracite. Ukraine offers coal that is not suitable for our plant. We have two coal blocks. They run on anthracite,” Krasnoselsky said.
Although the Transnistrian leader noted that the technical conversion of one of the power units to Ukrainian coal is possible, he noted that under “normal conditions”, which do not exist, the process would take “more than a year and cost more than 50 million euros”.
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine was ready to supply coal to Moldovan TPP and, in return, could receive electricity from Tiraspol.
Quote from Zelenskyy: “This is fair: we give coal, they get electricity for themselves, for the whole of Moldova, we get electricity for ourselves,” the president concluded.
Background:

- Moldovan energy companies Moldovagaz and Energocom are ready to assist Transnistria’s Tiraspoltransgaz in organising gas purchases on any European platform on market conditions.
- The cut-off of Russian gas supplies to Transnistria, a separatist region of Moldova, has led to the shutdown of all industrial companies, except for those involved in food production.
- Authorities in Transnistria, a separatist region of Moldova, agreed to receive gas from Moldova to help resolve the energy crisis.
- Gas reserves in Transnistria will last just a few days, and coal for electricity generation at the Moldovan Thermal Power Plant will last until 16-17 February at the latest.
