Details: The National Intelligence Service (NIS) of South Korea shared this information with lawmakers during a closed session of the parliamentary intelligence committee, as reported by Lee Seong-kweun, a representative of the ruling People Power Party.
The intelligence agency analysed a recently obtained video of combat operations and noted that the “massive casualties” among North Korean soldiers sent to support Moscow’s war in Ukraine were due to their “lack of understanding of modern warfare” including their “useless” shooting at drones.
The NIS also stated that North Korea forces its soldiers to commit suicide to avoid Ukrainian captivity.
Commenting on a video published by Ukraine showing two captured North Korean soldiers, Lee emphasised that “the prisoner of war has not expressed his intention to come to South Korea”.
The NIS noted that the two North Korean soldiers captured by Ukrainian forces in Russia’s Kursk Oblast served in the Reconnaissance General Bureau, a key North Korean military intelligence agency.
Background:
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared the first video of the interrogation of North Korean soldiers captured in Russia’s Kursk Oblast and stated that Ukraine is ready to return them to their home country as part of a prisoner exchange with Russia. However, when asked if he wanted to return to North Korea, one of the soldiers said he wished to stay in Ukraine.
- It was first reported on 11 January that Ukrainian soldiers captured two North Korean servicemen in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. At that time, Special Operations Forces (SOF) released footage of the capture and evacuation of one North Korean soldier from Russia. The other was shown by Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces.
- Russian media reported that a forged military ID found on one of the North Korean POWs in Kursk Oblast was issued under the name of a real resident of Russia’s Tuva Republic.
