On 17 January, Skuodis reportedly discussed the issue of strengthening sanctions against Russia and Belarus with Kristen Michal, Estonia’s Minister of Climate, and Kaspars Briškens, Latvia’s Minister of Transport.

Quote: “We agreed that it is necessary to coordinate all actions with each other, avoiding individual national initiatives and continuing the exchange of information on transport sector issues, such as [those related to] grain and others,” Skuodis said.

In addition, Skuodis stated that little Russian grain is transported through Latvia, with the majority going through Lithuania which is a “major problem.”

Background:

  • In 2023, Russia exported at least 4 million tonnes of grain from occupied Ukrainian territories.
