Quote from the Defence Ministry: “The inspection measures are set to progressively intensify, involving all training and combat ranges of the Armed Forces.”

Details: Belaruski Hajun reports that the inspection is expected to involve two anti-aircraft missile brigades, two air surveillance brigades, five anti-aircraft missile regiments and three air bases.

It is also planned to call up reserve conscripts to be engaged in the inspection.

Background:

  • In March-April 2024, Belarus launched an inspection of the combat readiness of the 120th Air Defence Missile Brigade.
  • On 3 September, the Belarusian Defence Ministry began military exercises in the Hrodna and Brest districts bordering Poland and Lithuania, which will last until the end of September.
  • On 26 August 2024, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry reported that Ukrainian intelligence agencies had information that Belarus had concentrated significant forces in the Gomel Oblast near Ukraine’s northern border.
  • Over more than two years of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Alexander Lukashenko, the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, has repeatedly claimed that NATO could attack Belarus.
  • This “threat” has led Belarus to conduct numerous military exercises near the borders of other countries and to deploy Russian nuclear weapons on its territory.
