Quote: “The Biden administration had also considered publicly calling for an official invitation to join NATO, but decided against it given the slim likelihood of success in the short term. Putin has also framed membership, which the allies said in July was inevitable, as a casus belli.”
Details: The report notes that instead, a series of bilateral security agreements will be concluded to provide Ukraine with certain guarantees.
Background:
- The White House, commenting on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Victory Plan, stated that NATO lacks consensus on Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance.
- On 20 October, the French outlet Le Monde reported that the Biden administration no longer had fundamental objections to inviting Ukraine to join NATO and, if Kamala Harris won the US presidential election on 5 November, it would likely begin moving in that direction.
- Reuters wrote that officials in Kyiv believe that with Donald Trump winning the US elections, the chances of Ukraine being invited to NATO have diminished.
