Details: As Biden said, approval of additional aid to Ukraine “can’t wait”: “Congress needs to pass supplemental funding for Ukraine before they break for the holiday recess. It’s as simple as that.”
As the president of the United States said, by refusing to do this, Congress “is willing to give Putin the greatest gift”, recalling Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine, from the abduction of children to the destruction of civilian infrastructure.
Quote: “If Putin takes Ukraine, he won’t stop there. It is important to see the long run here. He is going to keep going. He made it pretty clear.
And then he attacks a NATO ally, and we’ve committed, as a NATO member, to defend every inch of NATO territory, and we will have something that we don’t seek, and we don’t have today – American troops fighting Russian troops.”
More details: The US president stressed that the US cannot allow Russia to win, and its failure to help Ukraine “clearly strengthens Putin’s position”.
Background:
- Democrats in the US Senate unveiled a national security package on Tuesday worth about US$111 billion, which included aid to Ukraine and Israel as well as measures to secure the southern border with Mexico.
- The issue of protecting the US southern border has become a key source of disagreement between Democrats and Republicans in Congress, which is currently holding back the approval of the White House’s additional financial request for assistance to Ukraine.
- Republicans are calling for tougher immigration requirements to stem migration, even by violating US humanitarian obligations, while Democrats are pushing for a comprehensive overhaul of the immigration system itself.
