Canada announces CAD 38 million aid package for Ukraine

Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, has announced a package of measures in support of Ukraine worth CAD 52.4 million (about US$38.1 million) at the Peace Summit.

Details: Canada’s newly announced package of measures in support of Ukrainians includes CAD 15 million (US$10.9 million) to support vulnerable children, youth at risk, and the reintegration of displaced children returning to Ukraine through improved child protection services and family-based care options; to improve access to justice for survivors of war crimes; to increase families’ and civil society’s awareness about the missing persons; to support male survivors of conflict-related sexual violence, including prisoners of war.

CAD 20 million (US$14.5 million) will be allocated for the support of Ukraine’s urgent efforts to replace the damaged energy equipment and infrastructure.

In addition to this, to help improve the safety of Ukrainians and help Ukraine rebuild, the Government of Canada is investing CAD 15.4 million (US$11.2 million) to support the International Monetary Fund in its efforts to help Ukraine acquire the technical assistance and training needed for economic reforms and eventual accession to the European Union; to improve Ukraine’s capacity to safely clear its territory of mines and other explosive remnants of war; to provide Ukraine’s government with technical assistance from Canadian experts in justice and energy sectors.

Moreover, the Canadian government will also invest CAD 2 million (US$1.5 million) into the support of safe and secure operations of nuclear facilities in Ukraine through the International Atomic Energy Agency.
