Details: The Chinese statement said the parties exchanged views on “defence exchanges between China and NATO, international and regional situation.”
The Alliance indicated that their delegation was headed by Major General Dacian-Tiberiu Șerban, Director of the Cooperative Security Division, and the Chinese delegation was led by Major General Yao Qin, Deputy Director of the International Military Cooperation Office.
“Topics covered at the meeting included: the global and regional security landscapes, with emphasis on Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine; maritime security; and issues of common concern,” NATO said in a statement.
Representatives of the alliance separately stressed the importance of such negotiations, which are “a valuable forum to address shared concerns and interests and to foster transparency”.
The talks took place a week after Sweden joined NATO by becoming its 32nd member. Before that, the last round of military-level talks between China and NATO took place in February 2023 at the Alliance’s headquarters in Brussels.
In December, the heads of the US and Chinese armies held their first video conference talks in a year and a half.
