Quote: “Israel’s actions have gone beyond self-defence and it should heed the call of the international community and the Secretary-General of the United Nations to stop its collective punishment of the people in Gaza.”
Details: He added that both sides should avoid actions that lead to the escalation of the situation and should return to the negotiating table as soon as possible.
According to Wang, China is intensively communicating with Palestine, Israel and all concerned countries to achieve a ceasefire, ensure the safety of civilians and open humanitarian corridors to Gaza as soon as possible.
China’s chief diplomat emphasised the necessity of implementing the “two-state solution” as soon as possible and declared his country’s readiness to cooperate with Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries to support “the Palestinians’ just cause of restoring their national rights” and return the Palestinian issue “back to the right track of the two-state solution”.
The main diplomats of China and Saudi Arabia did not mention that the outbreak of violence in the Gaza Strip is a response to the attack on Israelis of unprecedented scale and brutality committed by the Hamas terrorist group.
Background:
- On the morning of 7 October, a large number of missiles were launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel by Hamas militants. More than 1,300 Israelis died as a result of the attack.
- Israel responded by launching large-scale strikes on the Gaza Strip and regained control of all border cities near the Gaza Strip.
- On 10 October, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Galant said Israel was moving to a “full offence” against the Gaza Strip.
- On 12 October, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) told the civilian residents of the northern part of the Gaza Strip they had 24 hours to evacuate further south for their safety and warned it would continue strikes against Hamas militants in Gaza.
- On 14 October, the IDF said that they were conducting numerous airstrikes on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip and were wrapping up preparations for a “significant ground operation”.
