The cleanup of the coastline of occupied Crimea from fuel oil leaked by damaged Russian ships is highly problematic due to the coastal zone being closed off by Russian military forces.

Details: Reports indicate that after the Ukrainian military successfully landed special forces on Crimea’s western shore in 2023, the Russian military established a defence barrier and prohibited local residents and tourists from reaching the majority of the beaches in the area.
This stops them from cleansing the beaches of gasoline oil. The Russians are supposedly attempting to find a “solution to this problem,” but thus far, “military priorities prevail over environmental ones.”
Background: On the morning of 15 December, two tankers, Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239, sank in the Kerch Strait. They were broken in half and fuel oil started leaking into the water.
