Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, has condemned Russia’s latest attack on Kherson railway station.

Details: Pejčinović Burić said Russia’s attack on Kherson railway station on 26 December was “reckless”. The attack claimed the life of a police officer and injured several other police officers and Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) workers.
“Again, victims are civilians. This is unacceptable [and] must stop,” Pejčinović Burić wrote.

Background:
- Ukrainska Pravda reported that Russian forces attacked Kherson railway station around 18:00 on 26 December, killing a police officer and injuring two of his colleagues and two civilians.
- Train passengers who came under Russian fire at Kherson railway station were able to travel to Mykolaiv safely by bus.
- The Council of Europe (CoE) still hopes to force Russia to comply with the European Court of Human Rights’ rulings, despite the fact that Russia has not been a member of the CoE since spring 2022.
