A couple who miraculously survived the Russian attack on the Epicentre on 25 May in Kharkiv, which killed at least 19 people, contacted the police.

“At the time of the explosion, people did not hear anything, but glass was falling on them from everywhere. The security guard who was with them in the department opened the door to the street, and the couple could quickly leave the retail space,” the ministry reports.

The 67-year-old man remained unharmed, and his 66-year-old wife had minor injuries. They did not go to the hospital but came to the police headquarters to report that they were alive and well so that they would not be searched for any longer.

Search operations at the site of the Russian attack continue.

  • As of 29 May, the death toll as a result of this Russian attack increased to 19: one of the wounded died in hospital today. 50 people were injured, and two are still missing.
  • On 28 May, law enforcement officers found the body of an employee of Epicentr, whose 8-year-old son took a DNA test to help find his dad.
  • On 27 May, local services found unexploded munitions 80 metres from the Epicentr home improvement hypermarket, which indicates a “deliberate tactic by the Russian Federation aimed at destroying the civilian population of Kharkiv”.
