Current level of air defence allows Ukraine to avoid unnecessary interruptions during MiG aircraft takeoff – Zelenskyy

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on 17 November that the air defence level in Ukraine allows for modernising the reaction to takeoff of Russian MiG aircraft and Kindzhal missiles carriers, and there is no need to halt all the activities throughout Ukraine.

Details: Lately, air-raid warnings issued because of MiG-31K fighter jets taking off in Russia became prolonged. The Air Force of Ukraine connects this with Russian pilots practising refuelling midair. This affects the everyday life of Ukrainians: most institutions and facilities halt their work during air-raid warnings.
Background:
- The Air Force noted that the decision on whether to give an all-clear during long-lasting flights of Russian MiG-31K fighter jets can only be made by the top leadership of Ukraine. Meanwhile, the threat of missile attacks with Kindzhal missiles remains real.
- Yurii Ihnat, Spokesperson for the Air Force of Ukraine, explained that if there is a threat of ballistic missile use, an air-raid warning is issued in certain oblasts where the missiles can reach. MiG-31Ks and the Kinzhal air-to-ground missile launched from it can reach any part of Ukraine.
- At a meeting of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has given instructions to develop a solution to prevent prolonged air-raid warnings, which are caused by take-offs of MiG fighter jets, from paralysing the country.
