Details: In the last quarter of 2024, 43% of respondents expressed interest in the development of the war in Ukraine – 14 percentage points lower than at the beginning of the year.
This marks the first time since 2022 that interest in Ukraine’s events among Czechs has fallen below 50%. Throughout 2023, this figure hovered around 60%.
Support for the Czech government’s actions in aiding Ukraine stands at 36%. Meanwhile, 30% of respondents “strongly disagree” with the government’s approach, and 28% “somewhat disagree”.
Overall, disapproval has risen by 4 percentage points over the past year, with those strongly opposing the government’s actions increasing by 5 percentage points.
For comparison, in 2022, immediately following the start of the Russian invasion, 58% of Czechs supported their government’s assistance to Ukraine, while 35% opposed it.
Despite this decline in support, nearly three-quarters of respondents believe the international community should apply diplomatic pressure on Russia. Political and economic isolation of Russia is supported by 49% of respondents, 45% agree with providing financial aid to Ukraine, 42% back the delivery of military equipment and 11% would send troops to Ukraine to participate in combat operations.
The CVVM survey was conducted from 12 September to 28 November 2024, with 1,008 participants.
Background:
- In December 2024, another survey revealed that most Western Europeans believe Ukraine’s allies are not doing enough, both in terms of economic sanctions against Moscow and military and other aid to Kyiv, to prevent a Russian victory in the war.
- It also showed a sharp decline in Western Europe’s willingness to support Ukraine “until victory”, despite it being a critical time for Kyiv.
