Details: The Danish government decided to repurchase the plant, sold in 2008, amid Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which revealed a shortage of artillery projectiles in the European Union and NATO.

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has been going on for over a year and a half, has significantly increased the pressure on European munitions production. This critical situation underlines the urgency to resume projectile production in Denmark,” said Troels Lund Poulsen, Danish Defence Minister.

The Danish government did not disclose when exactly it planned to resume production of artillery projectiles or what types of ammunition will be manufactured at the plant.

Danish media reported that the deal to acquire the plant is estimated at DKK 19.6 million (US$2.8 million).

The Elling plant was established in 1676 and served as the sole supplier of artillery munitions to the Danish Armed Forces for a long time. The plant ceased operations in 1968 and was sold in 2008.

Background: Earlier this week, Denmark announced the allocation of DKK 100 million for a joint European order of 155mm artillery ammunition for Ukraine under the auspices of the European Defence Agency (EDA).

This comes amidst public talk in the West that NATO countries are running out of weapons and ammunition that they can give to Ukraine without risking themselves and that production should be ramped up as soon as possible.
