These funds are planned to be allocated by 2030 and will be directed to provide specific assistance to the two countries in creating administrative structures and legislation necessary for EU membership.

In the long term, support will also extend to candidate countries from the Western Balkans.

Quote: “Successful EU enlargement is crucial for Europe’s stability. It enhances the security of all of us when EU neighbouring countries strengthen their European roots and strive towards the opportunities for peace, stability, and prosperity that the EU offers,” said Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

Background:

  • An EU-Ukraine intergovernmental conference will be held in Luxembourg on Tuesday, 25 June to mark the official opening of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
  • Earlier, the EU Council approved negotiation frameworks for Ukraine and Moldova, paving the way for the start of accession negotiations.
