A draft law recognising as “illegal” the decision made by Soviet authorities in 1954 to return Crimea to Ukraine was submitted to the State Duma of Russia [the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia – ed.].

Source: Russian media outlets Meduza, Interfax

Details: The authors of the document suggest recognising the decision about the return of Crimea as “illegal and contradicting fundamental principles of a lawful state and the international law”.

Quote: “To recognize the decision to transfer Crimea Oblast from the Russian Soviet Federative Social Republic to the Ukrainian Soviet Republic, adopted on the basis of legal acts which had no legal basis, with the violation of the Constitution of the Russian SFSR and the Constitution of the USSR, as illegal and contradicting against fundamental principles of a lawful state and the international law.”

Details: The members of the Russian Parliament believe that the transfer of Crimea should be recognized as “illegal” in order to “knock away the ground from under the propaganda of the Ukrainian authorities about occupation of Crimea in 2014”.

The authors think that after the 1954 decision is recognised as invalid, it will allegedly “be way harder to support Kyiv’s intention to take back Crimea” for Ukraine allies.

The authors of the draft law are Russian MP Konstantin Zatulin and Senator Sergey Tsekov from the United Russia political party.
