Details: Before the meeting of EU foreign ministers, he reacted positively to the US decision to allow Ukraine to launch long-range missiles at Russian territory. At the same time, he expressed regret over the disclosure of this information, noting that he “would have preferred it to be a surprise for the Russians”.
Veldkamp confirmed that the Netherlands has long been supporting Ukraine’s right to use the weapons it has been given in Russia. The minister also noted that he sees no risk of an escalation of the conflict, calling it an “adequate response” to the participation of North Korean troops on the side of Russia.
Quote: “The Netherlands has repeatedly advocated that weapons that we supply to Ukraine can also be deployed on Russian territory. After all, that is the territory of the aggressor.”
Details: Veldkamp said that Ukraine’s deployment of long-range missiles is “completely permitted under international law” and complies with the UN Charter, in particular Article 51. “For a country that is defending itself, it is permitted to also deploy weapons on the territory of the aggressor. And that is Russia in this case,” he added.
Background:
- On 18 November, Matthew Miller, Spokesperson for the United States Department of State, refused to comment on media reports about Ukraine’s alleged authorisation to use ATACMS missiles to strike deep into Russian territory.
- Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said that the United States has allowed Ukraine to strike Russian territory to a depth of 300 kilometres.
- On 17 November, The New York Times reported, citing sources in the US administration, that Ukraine had received US permission to use long-range missiles against military targets located in the Russian rear.
- US news website Axios noted that the target of these weapons is currently Kursk Oblast, and the decision had been made in response to the involvement of North Korean troops in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
