Elon Musk’s X blocks Bellingcat investigation into Russian missile attack on Kyiv children’s hospital

The X platform, formerly known as Twitter and owned by American billionaire Elon Musk, has been blocking Bellingcat’s investigation into the Russian attack on the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv, which involved the use of a Kh-101 missile. Some users encounter a warning that the link may be dangerous when attempting to access it.

Details: “You can’t complete this action because this link has been identified by X or our partners as being potentially harmful,” says X’s URL Policy.

It also states that the link may fall into any of the following categories:

  • Malicious links that could steal personal information or harm electronic devices;
  • Spammy links that mislead people or disrupt their experience;
  • Violent or misleading content that could lead to real-world harm in the aftermath of a crisis incident;
  • Certain categories of content that, if posted directly on X, would violate its rules

Background:

  • Earlier, Bellingcat analysts and experts in nuclear weapons and missile technology confirmed that the Okhmatdyt hospital in Kyiv had been hit by a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile. This conclusion was based on video footage of the attack that appeared in open sources shortly after the strike.
  • On Monday, 8 July 2024, the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital was struck in a Russian attack. At the time, there were 627 children in the hospital, 8 of whom were injured, and 2 adults were killed.
