Details: Metsola reported that the decision to support talks with Ukraine was announced by the Conference of Presidents, a body that unites the European Parliament leadership and all political groups.

On Tuesday, 28 November, the Conference of Presidents held a meeting with Ruslan Stefanchuk, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine.

The president of the European Parliament said Ukraine is making impressive efforts to implement reforms and that the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament confirmed today that Ukraine has demonstrated a solid basis for opening accession talks.

Metsola emphasised that the process of the country’s accession to the European Union is not only the transfer of European laws and regulations into national legislation, but this process requires changes in the country’s society.

The Conference of Presidents noted in its statement that it believes that Ukraine will continue to ambitiously implement all necessary reforms to complete the implementation of the European Commission’s recommendations in order to open accession talks as soon as possible.

Political groups leaders noted that they see Ukraine’s future accession to the EU as a “geostrategic investment in a united and strong Europe”.

Quote: “Ukraine is and will remain a priority for the European Parliament. Ukraine can count on the restless effort and commitment to uphold the legitimate ambitions and aspirations of the Ukrainian people.

Political Groups leaders look forward to intensifying the cooperation with the Verkhovna Rada in 2024, including with inter-committee meetings and information visits.”

Background: Earlier in November, the European Parliament supported the amendment of the EU treaties, in particular the reform of the decision-making process in the EU.

The European Parliament also condemned the Russian interference in the Georgian affairs and called for sanctions against the ongoing occupation.
