Far-right Alternative for Germany party refuses to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at party congress

Members of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party have refused to include a provision condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in their electoral programme on January 12, during a party congress in the city of Riesa.

Details: It was reported that Bundestag member Albrecht Glaser proposed adding a provision to the AfD manifesto condemning Russian aggression.
He criticised the fact that the 85-page draft programme of the party contains “not a single word” of criticism against Russia’s attack on Ukraine. His proposed provision clearly stated that Russia’s war “violates many norms of international law on the protection of civilians” and therefore the AfD “condemns Putin’s actions”.
Quote: “However, 69% of the approximately 600 delegates at the party congress voted against this proposal.”
Details: In the approved draft of the party’s electoral programme, the war in Ukraine is only mentioned briefly, without criticising Russia. “The war in Ukraine has shaken the European peace order. We see Ukraine’s future as a neutral state outside NATO and the EU,” the document states.
Background:
- The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is one of the most pro-Russian in the country. It is predicted to take second place in the snap parliamentary elections on 23 February. However, it has no chance of entering the government, as all other parties refuse to cooperate with it.
- In its electoral programme, AfD proposes Germany’s withdrawal from the EU, the Paris Agreement on climate and the euro currency. Recently, its leader stated that she wants to resume operations of the Russian Nord Stream gas pipeline.
- The party is openly supported by American billionaire Elon Musk. In his statements, Musk claims that only AfD “can save Germany” and recommends his followers vote for the party.
- A poll revealed that most Germans believe Musk’s support for the far-right AfD has positively influenced the party’s position ahead of the snap elections on 23 February.
