Details: The New Popular Front, a coalition of left-wing parties, came in second. 29.1% voted for it.

Current President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party and its allies received 21.5% of the vote.

Also, 10% of French voters supported the Republicans, some of whom may form an alliance with the far right.

It is also reported that the turnout for these elections was a record 69%.

Following his party’s defeat in the June European Parliament elections, French President Emmanuel Macron unexpectedly proposed early parliamentary elections.

The French will elect 577 MPs to the National Assembly, the lowest house of Parliament. The country has a majority electoral system, which means a candidate may only win if he secures an absolute majority of votes.

If this does not occur, the second round is held (in France, it is set for 7 July). It includes all candidates who obtained at least 12.5% of registered votes in the first round. The winner is the one who receives the most votes.

According to preliminary opinion polls, the far-right National Rally leads with 33-36% of the vote, followed by the left-wing coalition New Popular Front with 28-31%. Macron’s centrist alliance should expect to win 20-23% of the votes.

If the National Rally wins an absolute majority in the National Assembly, France may see a situation in which the president and cabinet come from opposing political parties for the first time since the 1990s.

The French far-right has already sought the return of France’s contribution to the EU budget, expressed disagreement with the EU on job creation, and rejected Macron’s calls for more EU unity and proactivity on defence problems.

The National Rally’s position on the Russian-Ukrainian war remains unknown. While the party currently claims it will assist Ukraine in defending itself against Russian forces, it has also established red lines, such as not giving long-range weaponry.
