Former National Guard unit commander suspected of causing US$700,000 in losses

Pravda Ukraine

The illicit activities of a former head of a National Guard training centre have been uncovered by the military counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI). The individual in question presently serves as the first deputy head of a district military administration in Lviv Oblast.

Details: The official purchased 72 RGS-50 fuel storage tanks using state funds at artificially inflated prices in April 2022, while serving as the commander of a National Guard military unit.

It has been established that the military unit paid almost UAH 64.5 million (about US$1.77 million) for the tanks, despite their market value being UAH 39.3 million (about US$1.08 million).

Consequently, the individual’s illegal activities led to losses for Ukraine’s defence budget exceeding UAH 25 million (roughly US$700,000), law enforcement officials said.

The investigation materials show that the official entered into this agreement despite several companies offering more favourable terms regarding delivery schedules and the assessed value of the fuel storage tanks.

Based on the evidence gathered, the official (who resigned in March 2023 due to health reasons and currently holds the position of deputy head of the Zolochiv district military administration) has been served with a notice of suspicion of negligence in military service committed in wartime.

Material evidence has been sent for examination. The prosecutors have submitted a request to the court for the arrest of the suspect.

The perpetrator faces up to eight years in prison.
