France urges China not to help Russia in its war against Ukraine

During her official visit to China, Catherine Colonna, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, has urged China not to assist Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine.

Quote: “France underlines once again how its cooperation with China is essential to promote a just and lasting peace,” Colonna stressed.
Details: The official called on China to pursue efforts on its peace plan concerning Ukraine, ensuring that Chinese structures do not assist Russia in the war.
“We are counting on the vigilance of the Chinese authorities so that no structure in China, particularly private, contributes directly or indirectly to Russia’s illegal war effort in Ukraine,” Colonna added.
Background:
- In a conversation with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, French President Emmanuel Macron voiced concern over military cooperation between Russia and North Korea amid a full-scale war against Ukraine.
- Earlier, the White House said China could contribute to Washington’s assistance in supporting Ukraine in its defence in the war of aggression waged by Russia.
- Meanwhile, during a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen urged Beijing to neither help Russia evade sanctions nor allow this to happen through Chinese companies.
