Pete Hegseth, nominated by Donald Trump as the US Secretary of Defense, stated that the upcoming administration understands the nature of the full-scale war in Ukraine and supports its swift resolution.

Details: Senator Angus King questioned Hegseth about his stance on Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, noting that it was absent from his brief opening statement.
In response, the Pentagon nominee said the matter is a political decision at the level of the US president-elect, who “has made it very clear that he would like to see an end to this conflict”.
Quote: “We know who the aggressor is. We know who the good guy is. We’d like to see it [the resolution – ed.] as advantageous for the Ukrainians as possible. But that war needs to come to an end.”
More details: The nomination of Hegseth, a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and Fox News host, has been overshadowed by scandals including alleged abuse of alcohol and harassment.
Despite the controversies, Trump has reaffirmed his support for Hegseth.
Background: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin, who are departing the office, explained in a joint column for The New York Times the risks of withdrawing military aid to Ukraine and a premature ceasefire.
