Details: Reportedly, in the last few months, Baerbock has not made any public statements about Taurus missiles which Scholz could perceive as undue pressure.
However, Baerbock relies on her allies.
Spiegel mentions the statement of the UK foreign secretary who suggested exchanging Taurus missiles for British Storm Shadow missiles, seemingly proposing what Baerbock failed to say openly.
The German foreign affairs minister is reportedly secretly working on a plan for Germany to send cruise missiles to Ukraine and not cross the red lines outlined by Scholz.
One of the options is the following: Germany transfers Taurus to the UK, which it hands it over to Ukraine, but preserves control over its deployment and targets.
Baerbock has so far not managed to convince Scholz.
The minister plans to supply Ukraine with way more than one armament system. Ukraine still holds the defence. Sources from Baerbock’s inner circle report that in this situation Scholz should explain to Germans what Ukraine’s defeat would mean for Europe’s security.
The key reason why Olaf Scholz, chancellor of Germany, is actively opposing the supply of long-range cruise missiles Taurus to Ukraine may be connected to special features of the targeting system of these missiles.
Earlier Scholz publicly gave different reasons why Germany would not supply Ukraine with the Taurus missiles – from avoiding the escalation and being involved in the war with Russia to the concern that the missiles will be used to strike on Moscow.
