German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has sharply criticised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s trips to Russia and China on his self-proclaimed “peace mission”, stressing that they do not reflect the position of the EU.

Details: Asked about her opinion of Orbán’s “peacemaking trips”, Baerbock said: “Well, sometimes you wonder about the ego, especially of some men.

Every country in the European Union knows that especially in the field of foreign policy and security, the responsibility doesn’t lie with the presidency [of the EU Council – ed.], which only lasts for six months, but with the High Representative of the European Union for foreign politics,” Baerbock explained.

Baerbock noted that during his trip to Moscow, Orbán basically urged Ukraine to “stop defending itself”. “Telling this to the victim of an aggression – that is in total breach not only of the European Union peace order but also of the UN Charter,” she added.

Baerbock pointed out that in Beijing, Orbán did not urge China to stop supporting Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

“It obviously makes it very clear that this is not the foreign policy of the European Union,” Baerbock summed up.

A number of European leaders have criticised Viktor Orbán’s “peacemaking” visit to Moscow, and Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, has stressed that Orbán has no mandate to interact with Russia on behalf of the EU.
