Details: The spokesperson said such a manoeuvre will ensure more open sea space to the south, in case something unexpected happens.

The Eventin, carrying 100,000 tonnes of oil, had been drifting in the Baltic Sea since the evening of Friday, 10 January due to a power outage on board, which left the ship unable to manoeuvre.

The Eventin flies the Panamanian flag, but according to the international environmental organisation Greenpeace, it is actually one of the ships from the so-called Russian shadow fleet which Moscow uses to sell oil in violation of embargoes.

The tanker, carrying 99,000 tonnes of oil, had been drifting near Germany’s coast after the accident. Germany sent a multipurpose vessel and a tugboat for its evacuation.

It is currently unclear where exactly the Eventin will be towed, but the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies in Germany emphasised that the ship has no external damage and does not pose an environmental threat.

Background

  • In October 2024, a small oil tanker named Annika, carrying 640 tonnes of oil, caught fire less than five kilometres from the shore while en route from Germany’s Rostock to Travemünde.
  • Finland reported technical defects in a tanker suspected of damaging an underwater power line and several communication cables in the Gulf of Finland and which is considered to be part of the shadow fleet.
