HKFP Lens: Cosplay fans flock to first day of Ani-com & Games Hong Kong 2024
Hong Kong Free Press
Cosplay enthusiasts lined up outside the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai on Friday morning to enter Ani-com & Games Hong Kong 2024 (ACG), the city’s largest event for fans of anime, comics and games.
Spanning five days, the annual gathering attracts thousands of visitors, as well as over 140 exhibitors selling themed artwork and merchandise. After vendors reported weak sales in 2023, exhibitors interviewed by local media had mixed opinions of what to expect for this year’s event.
Some appeared hopeful that large crowds of attendees would translate into good business, while others worried that the trend of Hongkongers spending across the border in mainland China would have an impact.
First held in 1999, ACG has this year has been named a “mega event,” part of a government plan to position Hong Kong as the “events capital of Asia” by highlighting large-scale happenings in the city to drive tourism and boost the economy.
Many of the events included on the government’s calendar, such as ACG, have long been held in the city.
