HKFP Lens: Hong Kong awash with public displays of patriotism on China’s National Day
Hong Kong Free Press

Hong Kong marked the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on Tuesday with more than 400 events, discounts on public transport and at certain restaurants, and free admission to government-managed museums.

Each of the city’s 18 districts also erected patriotic displays to mark the public holiday – known as National Day – with flags, light installations and plenty of red.

The Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront promenade played host to some particularly enthusiastic demonstrations of pride in the Chinese nation, with people wrapped up in traditional dress despite a “very hot” weather warning being in place as temperatures reached upwards of 33 degrees Celsius.

Housing estates, such as Shun Lee Estate in Kwun Tong, hung countless Chinese flags from their railings to mark the occasion.

The Hong Kong Museum of History was mobbed on Tuesday afternoon as people queued to enter its new national security exhibition.
