A four-year-old boy in Hong Kong has died after he was given unprescribed herbal pills by his mother, who was arrested over alleged ill-treatment of her son.
The boy, surnamed Chou, died around 7.30 pm at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei on Sunday. His 37-year-old mother, surnamed Tang, was arrested on suspicion of “ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of child or young person.”
According to police, a report was made by the boy’s mother at around noon on Sunday, saying the boy had passed out in their flat in To Kwa Wan.
Local media reported on Sunday that the boy had been given two herbal pills by his mother at around 11 am after suffering an asthma attack. The pills were imported from mainland China and were not prescribed by a doctor.
The boy lost consciousness shortly afterwards and was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police’s Kowloon City District criminal investigation unit is following the case.
