Hong Kong’s Observatory is expected to issue the Standby Signal No.1 on Wednesday evening, as Tropical Cyclone Saola closes in on the city.

“Under the influence of the northeast monsoon, there are still uncertainties in Saola’s subsequent movement and intensity. It may make landfall over Guangdong, or move westwards along the coastal waters of Guangdong,” the Observatory said, adding that wind and squally showers are expected.

Owing to a broad trough of low pressure, showers are predicted over the weekend and into next week as another storm – Tropical Cyclone Haikui – moves towards Japan’s Ryukyu Islands.

Temperatures on Thursday will range from 27 to 32 degrees Celsius.

Typhoon Signal 1

The No.1 signal is the “Standby” signal. It is issued when a tropical cyclone is centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong and may affect the territory.

  • All schools and government services remain open.
  • All public transport remains in service.
  • The government advice is to take the tropical cyclone into account when planning activities and be wary of potential strong winds over offshore waters.
