Hong Kong swimmer Siobhan Haughey has advanced to the women’s 100-metre freestyle final at the Paris Olympics, while mixed table tennis pair Doo Hoi-kem and Wong Chun-ting missed out on a medal but achieved history for the city by making it to the final four teams.
Haughey qualified fastest out of 16 swimmers in the women’s 100-metre freestyle semi-finals in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Hong Kong time. She recorded a time of 52.64 seconds, 0.08 seconds ahead of Australian swimmer Shayna Jack in second place.
Haughey will race in the final at 2.30 am on Thursday.
Earlier on Tuesday early morning, the 26-year-old athlete has become the city’s most decorated Olympian when she took bronze in the pool for the 200-metre freestyle event.
Haughey won silver for 200-metre freestyle and another silver for 100-metre freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
Separately, table tennis duo Doo and Wong missed out on the bronze medal after falling to South Korea.
The pair told the press after the match they had tried their best. “It was not easy to make it though to the final four. Although we did not win a medal, but it’s good enough that we made it to fourth place as every competing team was very strong,” Doo said in Cantonese.
Benjamin Yeung, a coach of the China Hong Kong Table Tennis Association, said on RTHK on Wednesday morning, that the duo had performed at their best at the Paris Olympics and he believed the team could go further in the future.
35 Hong Kong athletes at Paris Olympics
Hong Kong sent thirty-five athletes to compete in 13 sporting events across France at the Paris Olympics. The city is currently 10th on the Olympics medals table.
The fencing team has made history by winning two gold medals, making it the first time Hong Kong has ever won two gold medals at a single Olympics. Edgar Cheung, a gold medal winner in men’s individual foil at the Tokyo Olympics, successfully defended his title after winning against Italian fencer Filippo Macchi in a tightly-fought final. Fencer Vivian Kong took gold in the women’s individual épée.
Hong Kong triathlete Jason Ng will compete in the men’s individual triathlon on Wednesday afternoon. The event was postponed from Tuesday after pollution levels in the River Seine, where the swimming section is due to take place, were deemed too high.
On Tuesday, swimmer Ian Ho, who is competing in his second Olympics, did not make it through to the semi-final of the men’s 100-metre freestyle. He will compete in the 50-metre freestyle on Thursday.
