Hong Kong athletes achieved the city’s best Olympics results, winning four medals in Paris. Fencers Vivian Kong and Edgar Cheung both clinched gold, while swimmer Siobhan Haughey bagged two bronze medals, placing Hong Kong 37th position on the medal table out of 91 medal-winning teams.

The parade, jointly organised by the government and the city’s Sports Federation and Olympic Committee, is scheduled to depart from the Hong Kong Sports Institute in Sha Tin at 10.15 am on Wednesday.

Two open-top buses carrying the athletes, their coaches and other delegation members are expected to pass Tai Wai Station at around 10.30 am, the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower at around 11 am, the Central Star Ferry Pier at 11.35 am, before arriving at Tamar Park at 11.45 am.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department advised residents to greet the athletes at Tai Wai Station, the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower, and the Central Star Ferry Pier.

After the bus parade, the athletes and members of the delegation will attend a luncheon hosted by Chief Executive John Lee at Government House in Central, and a welcome home reception.

Mainland Chinese Olympians

Separately, members of mainland China’s Olympic team is set to visit the city from August 29 to 31, continuing a tradition in place since the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

China won 40 gold medals in Paris, tying with the US on gold medal count but falling short on silver and bronze to place second on the medal table.

“We are extremely proud to have witnessed China’s competitive sports continue to scale new heights, and to demonstrate to the world the power of Chinese-style modernisation,” Lee said in a statement on Sunday.

The Chinese athletes will be greeted by the government upon their arrival and participate in exchanges with local athletes at the Hong Kong Sports Institute.

The delegation will also attend three public events including a gala show at Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wan Chai on the evening of August 30, as well as two demonstration sessions the following morning.

Tickets to the events will go on sale from Thursday, with buyers required to register their real-names to purchase them.

Around 5,300 tickets for the gala show and the demonstrations would be reserved for residents including free tickets for the underprivileged, the government said.
