Michel announced on the morning of 27 November that he had arrived in Budapest for consultations with the Prime Minister of Hungary in preparation for the European Council summit in mid-December. “EU unity requires constant effort and it’s our main strength,” he said.

In the evening, Orbán wrote on his Twitter (X) that the meeting was “useful”, without elaborating what he meant by that.

Background:

  • The negotiations took place against the background of Orbán’s recent letter to Michel, in which the Hungarian PM threatened to block all EU aid to Ukraine, as well as the country’s future accession to the European Union, if EU leaders do not agree to review their entire strategy of supporting Kyiv.
  • The leaders of the EU member states will consider these issues at a summit on 14-15 December.
  • The Hungarian government also announced “consultations” with their citizens, the main issue of which will be support for Ukraine’s membership in the EU.
