Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has said that in addition to providing military assistance for Ukraine, its partners should start looking for a political solution to put an end to the war the Russian invasion has unleashed.
Source: ANSA, an Italian media outlet, citing Crosetto during his visit to the Italian troops stationed in Malbork, Poland
Quote: “The war has been going on for almost two years now and I think that, alongside and in parallel with military engagement and support for Ukraine, it is important to take paths that lead to a political solution.
What cannot be achieved militarily – and up to now we have achieved the preservation of Ukraine, which could have been wiped out, and the consolidation of a border that blocked the Russian attack – can be achieved by opening a diplomatic and political front to try to achieve the same result through peace talks.”
Details: Crosetto said that what existed before the war has to be restored, and “what could not be done with weapons must be done in another way”.
Previously: On 23 December, The New York Times reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been sending signals through intermediaries since at least September that he is ready to agree to a ceasefire in the war of aggression against Ukraine, which would include freezing hostilities on the current contact line.
