Kremlin: No decision on Putin’s participation in G20 and APEC summits has been made yet

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that no decision has been made yet regarding Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s participation in the upcoming G20 and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summits.

Details: At the briefing, Peskov was asked whether Putin could meet with US President Joe Biden during the G20 and APEC summits.
Quote: “No discussions have taken place regarding this. Currently, there are no prerequisites, although the president has repeatedly stated that he remains open to all contacts for communication. As for the decision on attending the summit, it has not yet been made.”
Background:
- On 31 July, US President Joe Biden had a phone conversation with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and confirmed his attendance at the G20 summit, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro on 18-19 November.
- On 4 December 2023, the Brazilian President, whose country took over the presidency of the G20 on 1 December, announced that he would invite Vladimir Putin to the summit, despite the risk of the Russian leader’s arrest under the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) warrant.
- In March 2023, the ICC issued a warrant for Putin’s arrest over the illegal deportation of children from Ukraine. As a result, Putin did not attend the BRICS summit in South Africa, a signatory of the Rome Statute.
- Putin also skipped the recent G20 summit in India (which is not a signatory of the ICC), sending Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in his place.
- Meanwhile, on 2 September 2024, Putin arrived in Mongolia for an official visit. Prior to the visit, Peskov stated that the Kremlin was not concerned about Putin’s trip to Mongolia, which recognises the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.
