Political prisoner Rustem Seitmemetov has suffered a heart attack due to inadequate detention conditions in a Russian prison.

Source: Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) Commissioner for Human Rights, on Telegram

Details: He recalled that Seitmemetov was illegally detained by Russians in temporarily occupied Crimea and sentenced to 13 years in prison. Recently, it became known that he was moved for unknown reasons to a separate room that was not heated.

Quote from Lubinets: “To keep warm, the prisoner was forced to constantly move and engage in physical activities. During the execution [of the physical activities], Rustem lost consciousness. After a medical examination, he was diagnosed with a myocardial infarction.”

Details: The ombudsman emphasised that the political prisoner is given medications he is not familiar with, and they do not provide information about his health condition or the results of medical tests.

“The conditions of detention for any of the Ukrainian political prisoners do not comply with current norms of international law. This leads to a deterioration of the prisoner’s health and can effectively be equated with torture. I urge the international community to pay attention to Russia’s human rights violations!” Lubinets stressed.

Background: In October 2021, a court in Russian Rostov-on-Don sentenced four Crimean Tatars to prison terms ranging from 12 to 17 years. Rustem Seitmemetov was given a 13-year prison sentence.
