Krišjānis Kariņš, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Latvia, confirmed that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg did propose creating a multi-year fund to support Ukraine in the amount of US$100 billion.

At the request to comment on the announcement regarding the US$100 billion fund, Kariņš stated: “I think this proposal, which comes from the Secretary-General (of NATO), is very good.”

“This is the direction in which we need to think – how to pool our resources to be more effective in assisting Ukraine,” he added.

Kariņš noted that various proposals for funding such a fund are currently being discussed. He reminded that the Latvian government has committed to allocating 0.25% of the country’s GDP to support Kyiv.

“There are different ways to do this, but certainly, if we all contribute 0.25% of GDP to support Ukraine, then Ukraine’s financial problems will be solved,” Kariņš believes.

Background:

  • Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the allies must ensure long-term support for Ukraine amid discussions on a €100 billion fund.
  • According to European Pravda, discussions on the creation of a new multi-year fund to support Ukraine within the North Atlantic Alliance are expected to continue until the NATO summit.
