Details: The Latvian Foreign Ministry expressed its “categorical protest” to the head of the Russian embassy in connection with a Russian Shahed drone of military importance being found in the Rēzekne Municipality on 7 September.

Quote: “The Russian Chargé d’Affaires a.i. was requested to provide a comprehensive explanation of the incident, in which an unmanned aerial vehicle illegally violated Latvia’s airspace while also carrying explosives.”

The Russian chargé d’affaires assured the Latvian side that he would inform the Russian Foreign Ministry about the situation.

“The responsible Latvian authorities continue with an in-depth investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Latvia has informed its allies, the leadership of NATO and the EU, as well as, through diplomatic channels, its counterparts in the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of other countries about the situation,” the Latvian Ministry said.

Background:

  • On 8 September the Latvian president stated that on 7 September a Russian military UAV crashed in the Latvian territory.
  • The Latvian Armed Forces noted that the drone had been equipped with an explosive and entered the Latvian airspace from Belarus.
  • NATO commented that it had no information as to whether a Russian UAV entering the territory of Latvia was purposeful.
