Details: At the congress, Sahra Wagenknecht presented the main points of her election programme, which are set out in a 39-page document entitled Our country deserves more. The programme focuses on social promises and economic recovery through access to cheap Russian gas.
Quote: “We must return to the lowest price criterion, not ideology and double morality. We do not need to buy three times more expensive gas from the US.”
Details: Wagenknecht noted that the party should be elected to the next Bundestag to continue to pressure those who have a different view of what aid to Ukraine should look like.
Wagenknecht insists that sanctions “have nothing to do with the war and have zero effect” and they “have nothing to do with morality”.
The main points of the party’s programme include deepening relations with Russia, resuming imports of Russian oil and gas with the signing of multi-year contracts, lifting sanctions, and the war in Ukraine, which, they say, has not been stopped.
Among the party’s main demands are the cessation of German arms supplies to Ukraine, negotiations on the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia and the organisation of referendums there. Wagenknecht demands that Ukraine be ready to reach compromises.
Sahra Wagenknecht has long been called Putin’s “friend” because of her pro-Russian views. She has proposed her own “peace plan”: The West would stop supplying weapons to Ukraine if the Russian leader “agrees to an immediate ceasefire on the current line of contact”.
She and her fellow party members left the Bundestag when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke there in June 2024.
Background:
- Members of the far-right Alternative for Germany party refused to include a clause condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in their election programme at a party congress in Riesa on 12 January. 69% of the approximately 600 delegates at the party congress voted against the proposal.
