Details: During a conversation with the newly-elected Iranian president, the French leader urged him not to support Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Macron also told Pezeshkian to “do everything to avoid military escalation” between Israel and Lebanon after the missile strike on the Golan Heights, and called on Iran to “stop supporting destabilising actors” in the Middle East.
Iran has been providing Russia with Shahed drones since 2022. The drones are being used to attack Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. Western intelligence reports that Tehran may also provide Moscow with ballistic missiles, as North Korea has already done.
In addition, Iran and Russia are jointly opposing Western sanctions.
The new Iranian president, Masoud Peseshkian, who is considered a representative of the conditional reformist wing, took office on 30 July. His predecessor, Ebrahim Raisi, died in a helicopter crash in May.
The president’s position in the Iranian political system is not crucial, as the full power is in the hands of the supreme spiritual leader (Ayatollah).
