A Hong Kong secondary school teacher has been arrested on suspicion of installing a hidden camera in a girls’ school washroom. He was also suspended from all duties and barred from entering the campus and contacting any students or staff members.
Hong Kong police arrested a male teacher from St. Mary’s Canossian College (SMCC) after a hidden camera was found in a washroom in the Magdalen Building of the Tsim Sha Tsui campus last Monday, local media reported citing sources on Monday evening.
HKFP has reached out to the police for confirmation.
The all-girls secondary school said on Tuesday that the case, together with the device, had been handed over to the police for further investigation. The Education Bureau and the school’s incorporated management committee were also notified.
SMCC did not disclose details of the staff member involved, but said they had been suspended last Wednesday. The individual was also prohibited from setting foot on school premises, and forbidden from having direct or indirect contact with any students or fellow employees.
The school said it was “gravely concerned” about the safety of all school members and had inspected its premises, especially all washrooms and changing rooms to ensure privacy was protected. The school also sought advice from the police on improving safety measures on campus, it said.
“The school adopts a zero-tolerance policy to any act which poses threats to the safety of our community and will continue to use its best endeavours to ensure a safe learning environment,” the statement read.
A crisis management mechanism, which involved educational psychologists, school social workers and teachers, was activated to provide comfort and support to students, SMCC said.
A letter was also issued to all parents to inform them about the incident, the school added.
