Quote: “The information spread in the media that members of the family of Rustem Umierov, Defence Minister, are allegedly US citizens, is not true.
The minister’s children (his son is aged 10 years, and daughters are 8 and 2) are exclusively citizens of Ukraine. Umierov’s family members do not have citizenship of other countries.”
Details: The Ministry of Defence notes that the Ukrainian passports issued to Umierov’s children after the expiration of the previous ones were obtained at the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States. That is why the declaration referred to by the media indicated the place of issuance of the documents as the United States.
It is explained that in 2016, Umierov’s family was forced to go abroad due to attempts and threats due to the systematic activities of the incumbent defence minister regarding the liberation of temporarily occupied Crimea.
Since 2014, Rustem Umierov, as a delegate of the Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar People, together with Mustafa Dzhemilev, the leader of the Crimean Tatar People and representatives of the Mejlis spoke at all international platforms on violations of people’s rights in the occupied Crimea and was involved in the process of releasing political prisoners in Crimea (Qurultay is a national congress and the supreme representative plenipotentiary body of the Crimean Tatar people; Mejlis is a single supreme plenipotentiary representative and executive body of the Crimean Tatar people, between the sessions of Qurultay, elected by Qurultay among its delegates).
