Russian media report that since the announcement of mobilisation in Russia in September 2022, military courts have received 10,025 criminal cases concerning refusal to serve in the military.
Source: Russian media outlet Mediazona
Details: The media outlet reports that the number includes 9,059 cases of AWOL of the military unit, 627 cases of failure to comply with orders, and 339 cases of desertion (abandonment of a military duty or post without permission that is done with the intention of not returning – ed.) 10,085 people have been charged, 8,594 of whom have already been sentenced.
Prior to the mobilisation in the autumn of 2022, Russian soldiers were hardly prosecuted for refusing to serve.
In May 2024 alone, 929 criminal cases were brought to the courts. There were 844 cases of AWOL, 43 cases of failure to comply with orders, and 42 cases of desertion. The courts delivered 34-35 verdicts per day in such cases as of the end of April. Most often, judges hand down suspended sentences in such cases, which allows the command to return such soldiers to the combat zone.
