Ukraine’s Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Mykola Tochytskyi has stated that the national joint 24/7 newscast will remain active for the duration of the war in Ukraine.

Quote: “I’ve said before and I’m saying it again: as long as the war continues, we need the national joint 24/7 newscast. We need it for creating unified approaches to counter the propaganda that the Russian Federation is spreading about us.”

Details: He added that he had met with “colleagues from various channels”, and during the conversation, they agreed that “this should evolve into a more educational project, where we will explain more about what Ukrainian culture is, and what we are planning to do to preserve it”.

Tochytskyi also assured that neither the newcast nor the activities of the Ministry of Culture are subject to any censorship.

“Whenever there is an interview with a guest on the national joint 24/7 newscast, I don’t see or remember anyone being deliberately invited or not invited. Since the beginning, I’ve communicated with both the majority and the minority in politics,” said Tochytskyi.

He further emphasised that “as long as there is a war, there will be the national joint 24/7 newscast”, but added that it needs to become “a higher-quality product to keep it interesting”.

Quote: “It’s very important for us to create truly strategic communications for the modern world, not just for the outside but also for the domestic [audience]. Without a real discussion about ongoing processes, it will be quite difficult to win this war.”

Background:

  • At the beginning of the year, a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology showed that trust in the national joint 24/7 newscast among Ukrainians was declining, with only 36% of respondents expressing trust in February.
  • In August, over half of Ukrainians agreed that the newcast was no longer relevant.
