Details: Reportedly, NATO’s representation in Ukraine will change its head, who will now hold a new status as the special representative of the secretary general.

Discussions on who will assume this role are ongoing. Several sources of the European Pravda said that European NATO members insist that the appointee should not be American to balance US influence.

There will also be significant changes in NATO’s presence in Kyiv, both in terms of numbers and level.

Specifically, numerous “seconded officers” from allied states responsible for key areas are expected to be deployed.

“In short, NATO is taking its engagement with Ukraine seriously. This is perhaps the key change brought about by the Washington Summit,” the article states.

The new NATO structure in Kyiv is tasked with ensuring Ukraine’s readiness for accession, particularly through reforms in the security and defence sectors.

“This is perhaps the most positive news. If the bureaucratic machinery starts working towards Ukraine’s NATO membership, then this intention is not just at the level of politicians but is indeed planned to be implemented. Of course, Ukraine must remain committed to this path,” concludes the article.

Background:

  • At the summit, NATO also agreed to create a new structure to coordinate all types of assistance to Ukraine in the long term, called NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU).
  • The Ukrainian President’s Office is generally pleased with the outcome of the Washington NATO Summit.
