Number of Russian soldiers buried in occupied Crimea on the rise

New graves of Russian soldiers killed in the war against Ukraine are increasingly appearing in the Abdal cemetery in the occupied city of Simferopol, Crimea.

Details: Radio Liberty notes that as of mid-September 2024, there are now 60 graves of dead Russian troops on a separate military path in sector 127 of the Abdal-1 cemetery in Simferopol. A local resident says that 10 days ago there were only 56 graves; a year ago, there were just 20.

Quote: “Some of the deceased soldiers who were originally from the Crimean capital are buried alongside their relatives in the same Abdal-1 cemetery, and some in Abdal-2 (the new Abdal cemetery).”

Details: The Russian occupation authorities do not give out any information regarding the deceased, such as the circumstances and place of their death.

  • At least 1,312 Russian soldiers killed in the war against Ukraine have been buried in Crimea, with 762 of them likely to have been Ukrainian citizens, the Representative Office of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea has reported.
  • According to Krym.Realii (Crimea Realities), a Radio Liberty project, the number of confirmed deaths among Crimeans serving in the Russian Armed Forces during the war against Ukraine has surpassed 840, with 40 of those deaths reported in August 2024.
