Around 34 per cent of candidates who sat Hong Kong’s university entrance exams have lodged appeals of their results, according to the city’s examinations authority.

Among the 48,762 candidates who received their results on July 19, four earned perfect scores.

In a press release issued by the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) on Wednesday morning, the authority said over 16,600 candidates who sat this year’s Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) had applied for their exam papers to be checked or marked again, 1.7 per cent more than last year.

Over 37,600 subjects or components in the papers would be marked again, while there were requests for 172 papers to be rechecked. Each candidate can apply for papers for up to four subjects to be looked at again.

Close to 40,000 people who sought to enrol at local universities through the Joint University Programmes Admission System (JUPAS) will receive their application results online on August 16. Those whose grades have been raised as a result of their appeals will be notified via SMS on the same day and given a chance to rearrange their university preferences.

This year is the second least competitive year for university admissions since the city introduced the HKDSE 11 years ago. The admission system saw the fewest applicants last year, when 38,955 people applied for public-funded tertiary education.

In 2022, nearly 40 per cent of JUPAS applicants were offered a place in their top five tertiary education programmes. Among them, nearly 90 per cent got into their first choice.
